A blind review of "Coffee In Bed" (the homebrewed version) by Jeffrey Swearengin
Jeff is someone I have great respect for, he makes incredible meads, it was a pleasure to see that he was assigned to judge my mead at this years National Homebrew Competition.
Used with out Jeff's permission.
Carbonation level - still, Sweetness - Sweet, Strength - Sack
Aroma: 8/10
Initial spiciness (e.g. Star Anise, Licorice) fades quickly behind the arabica (Sumatra) coffee with some subtle vanilla which adds complexity. Moderate - Strong impression from wildflower honey. Alcohol noted.
Appearance: 5/6
Deep golden - goldenrod in color w/ a few loose bubbles create from the pour. Near brilliant clarity w/ some lingering legs.
Flavor: 20/24
Starrts off w/ a lovely wildflower honey sweetness which gives way to a touch of fruitiness. Starts to become cloying then the coffeee/acidity kicks in to bring some balance to this big dessert mead. Full bodied w/ good complexity. Well intigrated flavor(s).
Overall Impression 7/10
Well made coffee mead. The bean (sumatra) selection seems to compliment the honey. A bit more acid could help balance the sweetness. This one reminds me of the liquor Tuala for some reason? Well done blending/aging this one. Bring on the coffee cake or a Vanilla Slice! Salut!
40/50
